Planning for an Australian Holiday: How to Get Around
Australia has a very comprehensive transport system. However, for someone new to the area, the network may be quite difficult to comprehend. To ensure you don’t waste your time, plan your holiday well by knowing how to get around.
There are actually three ways on how you can get to Australia: plane, cruise, and overland tour. The most popular of them all is the first one. With the growth of budget airlines such as Tiger, Jetstar Airways, V Australia, and Air Asia, it’s more affordable to book a flight.
Most of the airplanes would land in Sydney, which is the biggest city in the country. However, there are also airports found in Cairns, Darwin, and Gold Coast. Moreover, since the distances among regions in Australia are far, many locals would also ride domestic planes, such as Qantas.
From the airports, you can reach your preferred destination through a rental car, train, or bus. Rental cars are the easiest. You simply need to book ahead. The airports also have rental car shops. However, if you want to save on costs, consider the other two options.
If you come from Sydney, you can just take the airport link or City Hopper. It’s a railway system that passes through the domestic and international terminals. Then it goes off to 15 city stations.
There are different types of railway networks in the country. Most of them have direct connections to the city only. For example the train may travel from Cairns to the nearest city, which is Brisbane. If you’re backpacking or going on long distances, you have to settle for the long-distance trains. The most popular include Great Southern Railways that go through Sydney, Adelaide, and the Indian Pacific. You also have the V/Line Passenger, a coach and train service that can go all from Victoria to all the way to Canberra. Other choices are CountryLink and TransWa.
You can also travel through bus, like Greyhound, but they are only good at interstate travel. You may find transferring at various buses time-consuming and exhausting. Nevertheless, the buses or coaches in Australia are very comfortable. They have their own air-conditioning systems, entertainment gadgets such as DVD players and television, as well as adjustable seats. There are also several bus stations and bus stops. Just make sure you can keep track of the bus schedule to ensure you don’t miss out a ride.
Since Australia is also made up of islands, such as Tasmania, ferries are available. The cruise can last for several minutes to hours, depending on the distance, and is available to the public on a daily basis. If you need to cross your vehicle across narrow bodies of water, you can make use of punts.
Depending on the size of the town and the condition of traffic, you can also just walk and explore the area through a bicycle. You can find many bikes for hire, especially within parks and gardens.
At some areas, hitchhiking is allowed, but just to play it safe, don’t do it.
