Winter Holidays in New Zealand: A new found land

As the summer seems to have drawn to it’s usual wet and windy conclusion, the prospect of six months of British winter time isn’t exactly appealing. One solution, of course, is to head off on holiday to somewhere where it’s not winter. With so many
cheap flights to New Zealand
available through DialAFlight at the moment, there is no better place to visit than the land of the Kiwis.

New Zealand has just about everything that you could wish for in an entire continent crammed into a landmass only twice as large as England. There are incredible mountains, deep fjords, stretches of amazing coastline, rainforest, volcanoes, geysers, natural springs, in fact, the only thing there isn’t really, is desert. Otherwise New Zealand has the lot.

The best time to visit the country is during the summer time, or roughly from November to April. The climate is a little warmer than the UK, but in general it’s not the best country to visit in the winter, especially since a lot of the best things to see and do involve tramping (hiking) around the countryside.

Right at the top of your list of things to do should be throwing yourself off something high. Bungee jumping is practically the national sport of New Zealand and there’s no better place in the world to throw yourself off the side of a cliff.

That said, if you prefer something a little more chilled out, the other thing that you absolutely must do is take a train journey through the South Island on the TranzAlpine train service. It’s a great way to get around, it’s not that expensive, and you are guaranteed to see some of the most stunning landscape you will ever find.

A hidden treasure can be found on the west coast of the South Island, many people stick to the east coast with the likes of Christchurch and Dunedin, but the coastline on the west is eerily beautiful and looks like it was carved by giants just yesterday. There are massive fjords, but also long stretches of broken boulders that are simply unforgettable.

Of course, even the most ardent nature lover might struggle to spend their entire time out and about, and New Zealand’s cities have a great amount to offer too, particularly Christchurch, despite the recent devastating earthquake. As a final tip, to make you really feel like you’re enjoying home from home, check out New Zealand’s fish and chips, they’re definitely as good as anything you’d find back home in the UK!
